Morningside Hospital

The Woman in the Window

Morningside Hospital is the medical setting where Anna Fox is brought after being found unconscious in a park, and where her acute panic and history of illness enter the record. Its role is both practical and narrative: staff treat and question her during a crisis, while the hospital later returns as one scene in her effort to reconstruct what happened.

Admission and Acute Treatment

Emergency medical technicians cannot identify Anna when they find her unconscious in a park, so they bring her to Morningside Hospital. When she regains consciousness, she has a major panic attack; the hospital doctor later notes that another attack has occurred that morning. Anna is still distressed and, when she insists that a woman has been stabbed, her urgency is met with questions about her history of panic attacks. A young Hispanic doctor injects Anna with lorazepam. Anna notices the doctor's beauty, but the detail does not explain the treatment; the episode presents the injection as part of her care while she is in crisis. A nurse is also present, and Detective Little attends the conversation from a chair, placing medical treatment and police inquiry in the same room.

Questions, Contacts, and Disclosure

The doctor asks whether anyone should be contacted. Anna is about to name Ed, then decides there is no point. When asked for her own doctor, she first answers with Dr. Julian Fielding's name before withdrawing it. These aborted answers register her isolation and hesitation at a moment when hospital staff are trying to establish whom they can involve in her care. With Detective Little present, Anna eventually tells the doctor and the others about her agoraphobia, depression, panic disorder, drug regimen, and ten months indoors. She also describes Dr. Julian Fielding and his aversion therapy. The account takes time: her voice remains muffled, and she keeps drinking water as she speaks. After she finishes, the doctor consults her clipboard, then asks Detective Little to speak with her outside the room. The interview thus moves from Anna's condition to a private exchange between the doctor and the detective.

Place in Anna's Recollections

Morningside Hospital is also named when the doctor explains the circumstances of Anna's admission: the EMTs could not identify her, and she experienced a panic attack after coming around. This account situates the hospital as the immediate aftermath of her collapse, not as the setting of the events Anna is trying to report. Later, as Anna mentally rewinds the preceding days, the hospital appears among the episodes she passes in reverse alongside visits from the detectives, David, Alistair, and Ethan. The hospital therefore belongs to both the chronology of her crisis and her later attempt to sort memories and perceptions into an intelligible sequence. The available scenes establish its importance as a site of treatment and questioning, without making it the place where the events she recalls took place.
